In the year 2018, during the month of August, all of us saw another face of our mother earth
The state of Kerala witnessed 15% increase in rainfall and the misfortune of unexpected
flood followed The state was also not prepared for such a mega scale of disaster since
we have not experienced or expected a similar one in recent past Apart from the loss of
large number of human lives and livestock, we have witnessed small and large landslides
which resulted in immense loss on the state’s infrastructure, while many roads, bridges
thousands of houses where damaged or washed away in the avalanche of water and soil
The ecosystem damage is beyond assessment It is a time for rethinking and introspection
regarding our strategies in water management, development plans and construction
activities which can affect the fragility of environment, especially, the huge constructions
in ecologically sensitive area like Western Ghatts All these should be viewed in terms of
prevention, preparedness and risk reduction, emergency management etc
